Hope For The Downcast: Understanding Depression and Despair Biblically
Depression is more than sadness; Scripture calls it being “cast down” (Psalm 42:5). It touches both body and soul, sometimes from physical weakness, other times from the heart’s struggles with guilt or unbelief. The Bible distinguishes depression from despair: one is sorrow, the other a loss of hope in God (Lam. 3:18). Yet the psalmist reminds us, “Hope in God” (Psalm 42:11). For believers, Christ offers lasting mercy, strength, and unfailing love.
